Taste: My Life Through Food by Stanley Tucci Review
‘A Memoir full of Heart & Culinary Delights’
Stanley Tucci is best known as an actor, but is also someone who has a big passion for food & drink. This passion is derived from his childhood. Tucci grew up in an Italian-American family in New York, where every night his family would sit down at the table for a hearty meal.
As Stanley says, “Food was not just a huge part of my life; it basically was my life”. Taste: My Life Through Food is a brilliant biography-cooking book hybrid that just works so well thanks to Tucci’s expert storytelling.
Stanley Tucci has an extensive career starring in films like The Devil Wears Prada, The Hunger Games, Supernova and Spotlight. Tucci most recently presented the Emmy award-winning food travel series Searching For Italy on CNN. He has previously written two cookbooks, but Taste: My Life Through Food takes you on a charming and heartfelt journey like no other.
Tucci writes an excellent memoir that is intimate and heart-warming, with a focus on family. There are plenty of great anecdotes, all accompanied by witty writing to make you giggle while reading. And just in case you become hungry while reading this book, there are a plethora of delicious and easy-to-follow recipes throughout.
This book has a unique tone – and I like it. It’s honest, funny, light and distinctively Stanley Tucci. It has a great deal of authenticity and charm about it, which makes it impossible to not love Tucci’s writing style from the outset. Cooking, food and family become the primary themes throughout this tender memoir.
The sense of intimacy is explored when he reveals he underwent chemotherapy in 2017. He began treatment after a tumour was discovered at the base of his tongue. This meant he had to be fed through a tube. Tucci also opens up about his late wife Kathryn, who passed away in 2009 after a 4-year cancer battle. This book has a personal feel and while reading, it’s like you are going on a journey with Stanley himself.
Tucci also recalls receiving financial help from The Actors Fund in the early days of his acting career, and highlights how helpful the Fund was for aspiring actors. Although he gives great insight into the life of an aspiring actor, I would’ve liked to hear even more about the entertainment industry. Hopefully, we will see another book from Tucci in the next few years because he has a true talent for writing, as well as acting (and cooking).
Stanley Tucci has written the perfect book, a memoir/cooking book hybrid. It is written with humour and heart, it’s an absolute joy to read. Tucci uses an authentic and charming tone that goes from emotional to heart-warming and funny. All of these elements make this book easily recommendable to everyone I know. Plus, I can’t wait to try out some of the recipes in this book.
This is definitely one to gift this Christmas!
