Oscars 2022 Nominations List

Oscars 2022: “The Power Of The Dog” & “Dune” Lead Nominations

This year’s Oscar nominations have broken several records. Netflix’s The Power of the Dog has dominated the Academy with 12 noms, leading the race. Dune follows closely behind the Netflix western with a total of 10 Oscar nominations.

Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story reimagining and Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast each received 7 nominations. All four of these films are included in the Best Picture race alongside CODADon’t Look Up, Drive My Car, King Richard, Licorice Pizza and Nightmare Alley.

This year’s award season has seen many of the key players perform poorly at the box office as Coronavirus continues to affect the industry. West Side Story, Belfast and Nightmare Alley all achieved universal critical acclaim but failed to generate a buzz at the box office. Many Warner Bros. features, like Dune, opted for a dual release in cinemas and HBO Max amid uncertainty with new strains of COVID-19.

In terms of records broken today, Jane Campion’s nomination for The Power of the Dog meant she became the first-ever woman to earn two director noms. Campion was also nominated in the Adapted Screenplay category.

Belfast‘s success means that Branagh became the first person to earn seven Oscar nominations in seven different categories. He was nominated for directing, producing and writing the screenplay for the film. Branagh has previously earned Oscar nominations for best actor and best director for Henry V, best live-action short film for Swan Song, best supporting actor for My Week With Marilyn and adapted screenplay for Hamlet.

Also, CODA star Troy Kotsur became the second-ever deaf actor to be nominated for playing a deaf character, following Marlee Matlin, who won an Oscar for her role in Children of a Lesser God. Being the Ricardos star Javier Bardem and Parallel Mother’s” Penélope Cruz became the 6th married couple to be nominated for awards in the same year.
