December 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different…
The supporting cast includes BAFTA Award nominee Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner, The Party), Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water, Paddington) and Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Prometheus). Jack Farthing (Poldark, Official Secrets) plays Prince Charles. Filming took place in Germany, before finishing in the UK earlier this year. 2022 will mark the 25th anniversary of Diana’s death.
Spencer will premiere at the Venice Film Festival this September. There is already Awards buzz around the film and Stewart’s performance. The film was written by Peaky Blinders writer, Steven Knight.
Princess Diana has been portrayed on-screen multiple times. Most recently, Emma Corrin played the role of Diana in the fourth series of The Crown, and won a Golden Globe for her performance. Naomi Watts also portrayed the Princess in the 2013 biopic Diana, which was branded a disaster by critics. Elizabeth Debicki is next to take on the role in Season 5 of The Crown on Netflix, which is currently in production.
Spencer releases in Cinemas this November.
