The show follows the character of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. When Joseph is gifted a technicolour coat from his father, his many brothers get jealous. The brothers soon believe that Joseph will overrule them all and so they plot to sell Joseph as a slave. As things go from bad to worse, Joseph uses his unique ability to interpret people’s dreams. He soon ends up in the presence of the Pharaoh, who needs help understanding his unusual dreams.

Joseph, played by Jac Yarrow, brings both depth and charm to the title role with excellent vocals. The beating heart of the show comes from the role of The Narrator, played by Alexandra Burke. Burke’s flawless voice, comedic timing and electric energy are commendable.

Meanwhile, Jason Donovan takes on the role of the Pharaoh. He famously starred as Joseph in the 1991 West End revival but is back in a different role. Donovan is an excellent fit, giving a performance full of rock’n’roll and humour. The younger cast also excels in bringing comic relief to the show’s more serious elements.

The scale of this production is admirable for a touring show. From dazzling gold-plated set pieces to colourful costumes and lighting – the show is a joyous spectacle. Director Laurence Connor does a great job at bringing excellent staging and fluid pacing throughout. Similarly, Joann M. Hunter has choreographed masterfully, with numerous energetic sequences.

This beloved family musical is not to be missed. Performed in over 80 countries worldwide – it’s an irresistible phenomenon. Click here to book tickets now! At the Birmingham Hippodrome until 16th April.
