Tom Holland To Play Fred Astaire in Sony Biopic

The Spider-Man actor has confirmed that he’ll be playing Fred Astaire in an upcoming biopic from Sony Pictures.

In a quick interview promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor revealed he will be portraying the legendary dancer, actor and singer. In the interview, by Associated Press, the 25-year-old actor also revealed the script “came in about a week ago” and that Producer, Amy Pascal, has it. Holland is yet to read the script, but has had conversations with Pascal about the upcoming project.

Sony confirmed to Variety that the film is in the early stages of development. Therefore, we may not be seeing this film on the big screen for a few years. Tom Holland seems like the perfect match, as someone who has a dancing background. Holland played Billy Elliot on the West End stage in the hit musical, as a child between 2008 and 2010.

Fred Astaire is regarded as one of the greatest ever dancers and entertainers. The triple-threat legend starred in more than 30 movie musicals and performed on both Broadway and the West End, in a career stretching over seven decades. Astaire regularly starred alongside Ginger Rogers, best remembered in the 1934 classic, Top Hat.

There is currently another Fred Astaire project in the works. Jamie Bell (Rocketman) will play Astaire opposite Margaret Qualley as Ginger Rogers in an upcoming film from Amazon Studios. The film will follow the dance duo’s partnership, from 1933 to 1949.

No release date has been given for either project.
