Batman Spinoff Series about The Penguin in the Works

A series about The Penguin, a character from next year’s The Batman, is in early development at HBO Max.

Colin Farrell plays the supervillain in The Batman, which is set to release next year. Farrell has been approached to star in the spinoff series, but is yet to sign on. Sources also say that Lauren LeFranc is set to pen the script.

The show will delve into The Penguin’s rise to power in the Gotham criminal underworld. The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark will executive produce the series, along with Warner Bros. Television would produce.

The Penguin or Oswald Cobblepot, is one of the most famous Batman villains, previously played by actors like Danny DeVito and Robin Lord Taylor. Colin Farrell looked unrecognisable as The Penguin in The Batman‘s first Trailer.

If the Penguin show goes forward, it would be the second spinoff series from The Batman at HBO Max. The streamer has already ordered a drama within the Gotham Police Department. It is part of WarnerMedia’s attempt to launch a new interconnected Batman universe across all of its platforms.

The Batman is due to release in Cinemas in March 2022, after being delayed multiple times due to the pandemic. Robert Pattinson plays the title role, with Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis also starring.

There are numerous DC Comics shows in the works at HBO Max, including The Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker with John Cena, a Green Lantern series, and a Justice League Dark series from J.J. Abrams.

Other upcoming DC films include Shazam: Fury Of Gods, Black Adam, Aquaman 2 and The Flash. All of which are either in post-production or currently filming.

Variety reported on this first.
