Brits Dominate the Emmys

At the 73rd Emmy Awards, there were plenty of surprises in a night that celebrated the best of TV over the past year. Brits dominated the awards show, hosted by Cedric The Entertainer. 

The Crown ruled the night, picking up the drama series trophy, as well as prizes for Lead Actress and Lead Actor going to Olivia Colman and Josh O’Connor respectively. The Supporting Actress Drama Emmy was won by Gillian Anderson for her portrayal of Margret Thatcher in the series. The Crown also won for Supporting Actor (Tobias Menzies), writing (Peter Morgan) and directing (Jessica Hobbs). The Crown‘s fifth season is currently in production in the UK.

Apple’s Ted Lasso took home a large number of wins after being nominated for 20 Emmys – the most-nominated brand new Comedy Series ever. Jason Sudekis, Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein all won Comedy Acting Awards. Ted Lasso was also named Outstanding Comedy Series, while The Queen’s Gambit won for limited series.

Other highlights included an acting win for Ewan McGregor for his performance in Netflix’s Halston. Kate Winslet also gave an energetic and grateful speech after her win as the lead in Mare Of EasttownBy the end of the night, The Crown, Ted Lasso and Mare of Easttown took home 10 of the 12 acting awards up for grabs. 

Netflix won more Emmys than any other network or platform for the first time ever, with an impressive 44 awards. Popular shows Wandavision, Lovecraft Country, The Handmaid’s Tale and The Flight Attendant didn’t take home any of the big awards last night.
