Cruella Sequel in the Works at Disney

A sequel to the recently released ‘Cruella’ is in early development, according to THR. Director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for the sequel, along with Emma Stone in the iconic role.

Cruella told the origins of fan-favorite One Hundred and One Dalmatians villain, Cruella de Vil. The film, now in its second weekend, has received critical acclaim and a positive audience reaction, with a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stone’s performance was praised along with the whole cast chemistry. Audiences were also favourable for the 1970s London Punk aesthetic. To date, it has earned $48.5 million at the global box office. Cruella also released on Disney+ Premier Access, making it available to watch at home for £19.99.

Cruella marks a slightly darker move for Disney (with a 12A/PG-13 Rating) but it certainly seems to be a hit with audiences – hence why a sequel now in development. Cruella gives a fresh narrative that isn’t just a remake, it has a sense of originality using an already infamous character.

Disney has been reimagining its classics for years, with films like 2014’s Maleficent, 2019’s The Lion King and Aladdin. Each remake or reimagining doesn’t fail to bring in millions of dollars, with each film storming the global box office. Most took over $1 billion each, hence why Disney isn’t going to stop anytime soon. Of course, this was pre-pandemic and theatrical releases will struggle to reach the $1 billion mark in today’s climate. This may be why upcoming reimaginings will be releasing on Disney+.

Disney is placing a priority on its streaming platform, expanding its offerings, using franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. Upcoming reimaginings Peter Pan & Wendy and Pinocchio are currently in production, set to release on Disney+ next year.

Cruella is in Cinemas & streaming on Disney+ with Premier Access.
