Avatar Overtakes Avengers: Endgame as All-Time Highest Grossing Film at the Global Box Office
Avatar has overtaken Avengers: Endgame as the highest-grossing movie in history, after a recent re-release in China.
Avatar took the Box Office by storm in 2009 and had long been the most successful film ever made, until Avengers: Endgame beat the record in 2019. Avatar generated over $2.789 billion compared to Avengers: Endgame which raked in over $2.797 billion.
However, after a re-release in Chinese Cinemas, Avatar has gained an extra $8.9 million, meaning the James Cameron film has reclaimed its position as the highest-grossing film of all time. Avatar’s global box-office total is now an estimated $2,798,579,794 while Endgame stands at $2,797,501,328. It is estimated that Avatar will gain an extra $58 million in total from the re-release in China.
James Cameron recently confirmed that Avatar 2 has finished filming, and will release in December 2022. Filming for Avatar 3 is currently taking place on location in New Zealand. COVID-19 caused a significant delay to the production and pushed the release of Avatar 2 from December 2021 to December 2022.
